Mount Moroto is an ancient volcano (3,083) raises out of the semi-arid planes, the mountain is home to the So / Tepeth tribe also living in the western and northern mountains in the region, migrated from the planes when the Karamojong settled in the past.
The mountain is adjacent to the town of Moroto in Moroto District, Karamoja, Northern Region of Uganda. It is approximately 3 kilometres by road, east of Moroto’s central business district. Mount Moroto is one of a chain of volcanoes along Uganda’s international border with Kenya that begins with Mount Elgon in the south and includes Mount Kadam and Mount Morungole. Mount Moroto with its twin peaks Sogolomon and Sokdek, rises 3,082 metres out of the plains of Karamoja, home to the Karamajong.
The nature reserve that encloses Mount Moroto measures 483 square kilometres (119,000 acres) and contains over 220 bird species, monkeys and wild cats. Climbing trails exist and mountain guides are available.
Local guide who knows all the routes and this are available in the area, to whom your main guide can make an arrangement with for the hike.
Number of springs, running from the top of the mountain, flowing down do exist, this has support agriculture and has made the people of Karamoja to utilize the slope for agriculture.
A night before the hike to the mountain is spent at Moroto town, so as to make it easy to access the mountain the next day of the hike. Porters are available on request. Food, water, snacks and camping should be arranged by the hikers.
