Lake Bisina is a majestic Lake that strategically located in eastern Uganda approximately 15 kilometers along the Kumi district. Lake Bisina in eastern Uganda is your place to be for an unforgettable bird watching experience since is one of the thirty-three (33) Important Bird Areas since 2006, this it has been a Ramsar-listed wetland of International importance.
It also is known as Lake Salisbury a freshwater lake in eastern Uganda which drains into Lake Kyoga and the two are to some extent directly connected by papyrus swamps. Besides the rainy season, Lake Bisina can be up to 6 m deep and it is often directly connected to the smaller Lake Opeta, but during the dry season the two are clearly separated which gives you a magnificent view. In addition, it also affected by seasonal changes; water recedes in the dry season and the lake loses territory up to about 200 meters. Since, Bisina is served Lake Opeta whose waters from Karamoja Highlands and Mt. Elgon, if the dry season bites hard in the extreme eastern part of Uganda, the effect is vivid. This makes fishing incredibly difficult for the local fishermen.
The Lake is blessed with vegetation and wetland and its water is used by various activities by the locals, some engage in fishing and farming. The Lake is used as a feeding ground by wading birds, including the globally vulnerable Shoebill. The system is also important as a refuge for fish species that have gone extinct in the main Ugandan lakes such as Lakes Victoria and Kyoga.
